PhD consultancy: What it is permitted to do and what it is not.
The term is not protected. It therefore covers everything from reputable structural support to services that could permanently jeopardise your degree. This is where the line is drawn.
A PhD consultancy provides support with choosing a topic, drafting an exposé, finding a university and a supervisor, time management and exam preparation. What it is not allowed to do: write the text of your dissertation, provide analyses or guarantee you’ll be awarded the degree. The academic work must be entirely your own; otherwise, the degree is vulnerable to challenge.
What a consultancy service offers
The benefit lies in addressing the areas where projects typically fail: a question that is too broad, a lack of access to data, an unsuitable supervision request, and a timetable that fails to take your career into account.
Where the line is drawn
The line is easy to draw: everything that goes into the thesis must originate from you. An advisor may ask questions, check work, structure the content and provide feedback. They must not formulate, analyse or interpret anything that will later be submitted as your own work.
Anyone who provides text modules, chapters or ready-made analyses is engaging in ghostwriting. This permanently jeopardises your degree, regardless of what the service is called and regardless of how much you have amended it yourself.
Many doctoral regulations require a declaration regarding any assistance received. Check the wording of your faculty’s regulations and adhere to them. A transparent declaration never does any harm; failing to provide one could cost you everything.
Questions you should ask in advance
The name must be on the table before the contract is signed, as must its status in anabin. Anyone who evades the question has, in effect, answered it.
A clear, written list. If the role involves drafting the dissertation, it’s the wrong offer.
A genuine commitment relates to the service provided. Any commitment regarding the title, duration or approval is not to be trusted.
Academic supervision is provided by the university. Counselling is no substitute for this and should not claim to be.
Costs and contract terms
Reputable providers only quote a price once they are aware of your starting point, and they set out in detail which services will be provided and when. Flat-rate prices quoted without knowledge of your subject, prior work and target university are a warning sign, as is requiring payment in full in advance for the entire duration.
Pay attention to cancellation options and what happens if you do not commence your PhD or decide to withdraw. A contract that binds you for years without any services being provided is unusual.
Frequently asked questions.
What is PhD consultancy?+
A service that structures the path to a PhD: topic, research proposal, search for a university and supervisor, timetable, exam preparation. The academic work remains your responsibility.
Is PhD consultancy permitted?+
Advice and help with structuring your work are permitted. What is not permitted is taking over the academic work itself – that is, writing sections of the text or carrying out analyses on your behalf.
Do I have to declare that I’ve used the consultancy service?+
Many doctoral regulations require a declaration regarding any assistance received. Check your faculty’s regulations and adhere to them.
How can I spot untrustworthy providers?+
By promises of a degree title, firm, long-term guarantees made without knowing your topic, the name of your university being withheld, and offers to write sections of your text for you.
How much does consultancy cost?+
That depends on the scope and stages involved. A transparent quote following the initial consultation is standard practice; flat-rate promises are not.
Does the consultancy service replace academic supervision?+
No. Academic supervision is provided by the university. A consultation helps you prepare, structure and review your work.
Do I even need a consultancy service?+
No. It helps if you lack access to the academic community, time for preparation or experience with doctoral regulations.
