Buying a doctoral title: What’s on offer, and what really matters.
Anyone searching for ‘buy a doctorate’ will find offers. However, very few of these lead to a degree that you are actually permitted to use. This text sorts through what is on the market, explains how to recognise a legitimate degree, and outlines the options available.
A doctoral degree cannot be bought. It is awarded exclusively by a university following the completion of a doctoral programme. Three other things are sold on the market: honorary doctorates, titles from unrecognised institutions, and ghostwriting. None of these results in a legitimate ‘Dr.’ title. The legitimate route is a part-time PhD programme at a recognised university.
What is actually on offer
Behind the search for a title that can be bought, there is usually a legitimate motive: years of experience, demonstrable responsibility, but no degree to prove it. What is offered in this situation can be divided into three categories. None of them delivers what is intended.
Awarded, not earned. In Germany, an honorary doctorate may only be used with the suffix ‘h.c.’ or ‘E.h.’. Without this suffix, it is not a valid title. A market of its own has sprung up around Dubai, Doha and India.
Institutions that present themselves as universities without actually being so. Their degrees are listed in the anabin database with the status H− or are missing entirely. Result: cannot be used, cannot be included on ID documents; in case of doubt, a red flag on a CV rather than an asset.
The dissertation is produced, but not by you. If this comes to light later, the degree may be revoked. There are plenty of public examples of this. The reputation that the title was meant to bolster is then the first thing to be lost.
How to tell whether a degree is valid
There is no matter of opinion on this question, but rather a register. In Germany, the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) maintains the anabin database on behalf of the Kultusministerkonferenz. Every higher education institution is classified there:
If an institution is not listed, the ZAB carries out a certificate assessment to clarify the individual case. This assessment costs nothing but time, and it makes sense to carry it out before a decision is made, not afterwards.
The cost of using an unauthorised title
The unauthorised use of an academic title is not a trivial offence in Germany, but is punishable under § 132a StGB. Added to this is the less obvious aspect: a title that does not stand up to scrutiny works most strongly against you precisely where you have used it – in job applications, client engagements, supervisory board appointments and on your own website.
That is why the crucial question is not how quickly a title can be obtained, but whether it will stand the test of time. That is precisely the difference that a proper procedure makes.
The path that stands the test of time: studying for a PhD whilst working
Pursuing a PhD whilst working is demanding, but it is possible, and it is the only way to obtain a degree that no one can take away from you. The university decides on admission, examination and the awarding of the degree. Ascendius structures the path to this goal: choosing a topic, writing a research proposal, selecting a university, supervision and scheduling. You write the thesis yourself.
All the universities we work with are listed in anabin with H+ status. How the degree is subsequently recognised in your country is decided by the relevant authority there: in Germany, anabin and the ZAB; in Turkey, YÖK; in Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Education; in the UAE, MOHESR; and in the EU, the relevant ENIC-NARIC authority. We will let you know which one applies to you during the initial consultation.
Frequently asked questions.
Can you buy a doctoral title?+
No. A doctoral degree is awarded exclusively by a university following the completion of a doctoral programme. Offers promising a title in exchange for money relate to honorary doctorates, degrees from unrecognised institutions or ghostwriting; none of these result in a valid ‘Dr.’ title.
Is an honorary doctorate a doctoral title?+
An honorary doctorate is an award, not an academic degree earned through study. In Germany, it may only be used with the suffix ‘h.c.’ or ‘E.h.’, and it may only be entered on identity documents with this suffix.
Which doctoral title can be obtained the quickest?+
The duration depends on the subject, topic, prior work and supervision, not on the title itself. Anyone selling a shortcut is not selling a process. Realistically, a part-time PhD is a project spanning several years, which can be planned effectively if set up correctly from the outset.
Can you obtain a doctoral degree without studying?+
No. Admission to a PhD programme requires a university degree. In certain cases, it is also possible with a bachelor’s degree and relevant professional experience; whether this applies to you is determined by the PhD regulations of the respective university.
How can I spot a dubious PhD consultancy?+
There are three tell-tale signs: they promise the degree itself rather than providing guidance; they quote a fixed duration without knowing your research topic; or they offer to write parts of your thesis for you. A reputable advisory service structures and reviews your work; it does not write the thesis for you, nor does it award the degree.
