What a PhD costs.
The university does not usually charge tuition fees for a PhD. However, it is not free of charge. Here are the costs you will actually incur, as well as those that are often overlooked.
Direct costs include semester fees, literature, administrative charges, travel to conferences and the publication of your thesis. On top of this, there are optional costs such as proofreading, statistical advice or structured supervision. The biggest cost, however, is none of these, but rather your time over several years – and, if you’re working reduced hours, lost income as well.
The costs in detail
The costs vary greatly depending on the subject and survey design. A theoretical thesis costs little more than tuition fees and literature, whilst an empirical study involving your own data collection costs significantly more.
The items that are often overlooked
The biggest cost is not shown on any invoice: several years of time that are missing elsewhere. Anyone who reduces their teaching hours for the empirical phase also suffers a loss of income. Both factors must be factored into the decision; otherwise, one tends to overestimate the project’s cost-effectiveness.
Also frequently overlooked: the extension. Anyone who needs five years instead of three will pay two further years’ tuition fees and face the double burden for two years longer.
What may be possible for tax purposes
Expenses incurred whilst pursuing a PhD may qualify as income-related expenses or business expenses if there is a link to your profession. Your tax adviser will clarify whether this applies in your case and to what extent. We cannot provide any information on this matter, as we are neither permitted nor able to do so.
It is important to keep proper records from the outset: make sure you keep a clear record of tuition fees, specialist literature, travel, software and consultancy services. It is almost impossible to reconstruct this retrospectively.
