A PhD without a degree: what’s actually possible.
The short answer is no. The longer answer explains which route is still open to people with extensive experience but no degree, and how long it takes.
A doctoral degree requires a higher education qualification, usually a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification. There is no standard route to a PhD without a degree. Those with professional experience but no degree can meet the entry requirements through the university admission scheme for professionally qualified individuals and by undertaking a part-time degree programme.
Why there is no direct route
A PhD is the third level of higher education. It requires the second level – that is, a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification. This sequence is laid down in higher education law and implemented by the PhD regulations.
The reason is not bureaucratic: during your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, you acquire the methodological framework upon which a doctoral thesis is built. Without it, the foundation is missing, and no faculty can do without it without undermining the value of its own process.
Anyone offering a degree without a course of study is therefore either selling an honorary doctorate or a title from a non-recognised institution. Neither may be used as ‘Dr’.
The path for those with professional qualifications
It is longer than any shortcut, but it does exist and leads to a degree that carries weight. Moreover, each stage is useful in its own right for professional purposes, which makes it easier to persevere along the path.
What this means in practical terms
This path takes many years, and it only makes sense if you want to pursue it, not simply because you want a title. In return, the result is unassailable, and the intermediate steps already have an impact on your career long before the PhD begins.

Offers you should avoid
Where a doctoral degree is promised on the basis of ‘recognition of professional experience’, it is either an honorary doctorate for a fee or a degree from an institution without the right to award doctorates. Neither may be used in Germany to claim the title ‘Dr.’, and unauthorised use of the title is a criminal offence.
The test is always the same: Which university awards the degree? Is it listed in anabin with an ‘H+’? Is there a process involving your own academic work?

Can you obtain a doctoral title without studying?+
No. Admission to a doctoral programme requires a higher education qualification, usually a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
Are there any exceptions for professional experience?+
Professional experience can open the door to higher education without A-levels and may be taken into account in suitability assessments. However, it does not replace a degree.
What about an honorary doctorate?+

If studied alongside work, it takes several years to complete a Master’s degree, after which the PhD programme begins. However, every step of the process is of professional value.
Can I have my work experience recognised as part of my degree?+
Often, yes. Many universities recognise credits from professional development courses. The scope and procedure are determined by the university.
