DBA or Dr.: What the difference means for you.
The Doctor of Business Administration has become popular. Before you make up your mind, it’s worth considering two questions: How is the degree awarded, and how are you permitted to use the title?
The DBA is a practice-oriented doctoral degree, usually awarded through structured programmes that include coursework. The traditional ‘Dr.’ title is awarded on the basis of an independent academic thesis. The DBA market is international and confusing. Reputable programmes openly state the awarding university, its accreditation and the research requirements. Unreliable providers advertise the duration, use of the title and prestige without naming the university.
Also pay attention to who supervises your work and how many supervision hours are allocated. A programme without genuine supervision is an expensive course, not a doctorate.

A DBA may be suitable if you need a fixed structure, a cohort and a practical focus, and can arrange the dates to suit you. A traditional PhD is suitable if you wish to pursue your own research question over several years and value the traditional way of obtaining the degree in German-speaking countries.
